Feeling down today? Anxious? Distant from God? Allow the truth that you are a child of God permeate your thinking.

Galatians 3:26, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.”

John 1:12 – “To all who receive Christ, who believe in his name, he gave the right to become the children of God.”

What a glorious truth to rehearse in our minds.  Paul said it this way in Romans 8:14 – 17, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."

Several privileges of being God’s child emerge out of this paragraph:

1. You have assurance. You are a child of God not a slave of God. A servant obeys out of fear of punishment but a child never needs to worry about losing the child-parent relationship. We have the assurance to cry out to God as our Abba, our Father (see #3).

2. You have authority – in a house slaves have no authority. Children have the honor of the family name. We have authority over sin and the devil because we’re children of God.

3. You have closeness – “Abba” was an Aramaic term which can be translated “Daddy” a term of closeness. Most people call me Tim; but only my children can call me dad (and of course, my granddaughter calls me Pop). And this is how Christians can approach the all-powerful Creator of the universe, who sustains ever atom in existence moment by moment. We can call that God, “Abba”.

4. You have an inheritance – “if we are children, then we are heirs” (v.17). This means we have a fantastic future. We are co-heirs with Christ. Everything Christ has – I have, even though I don’t deserve it. We may share in his sufferings but we will also share in his glory.

All of these privileges as a child of God are possible because of our faith in Jesus Christ. Meditate on this truth. Receive this truth. Say it out loud right now, “I am a child of God.” That’s the truth about you.
